Resurrection on ABC
Resurrection on ABC is one of the newest additions to the TV line up at that SMSL household. It premiered on March 9, 2014 on ABC and let me tell you it was a fabulous mysterious/eerie pilot that leaves you on the edge of your seat. In the pilot episode is titled “The Return” and after watching it, the title made perfect sense. We have all lost someone in our lives that we wish they could come back to life. But Resurrection does just that with the first episode when an 8 year old boy wakes up in China alone. He of course knows he is from Arcadia, Missouri but the proper authorities don’t have a missing person report open. So immigration agent J. Martin Bellamy takes him back home to Arcadia, but that is when the the questions for me started to roll in. Jacob died over 30 years ago and the elderly couple who lived in the house were his parents, but what was going to happen to Jacob, his parents as well as members of the town?
As expected things weren’t smooth sailing during the first episode of Resurrection and with any good mystery there was a series of questions raised as the story line moved on. But with each answered question, came a new question that I wanted the answer to but have learned that I have to be patient. The Resurrection show is based loosely on the book “The Returned by Jason Mott” which has now made it to the top of my to read list. After the first episode, I thought I could be hooked, but after watching the second episode titled “Unearthed” I knew that it was a must watch show to watch until the end of the season. Because the town Arcadia, Missouri is being turned upside down, with people coming back to life just as they were the events in the episodes are very fitting. I don’t want to ruin episode 2 for you, but it is a MUST watch and we are watching it again tonight as a family.
RESURRECTION
While on my Los Angeles #ABCTVevent we had the opportunity to interview Resurrection Executive Producers Tara Butters (@breadandbutters) and Michele Fazekas. Which was an amazing trip and interview at well, that answered several questions, but also left some unanswered questions as well. They were both very nice, candid and answered all of our questions in great detail. The only question that I have left unanswered is “What would it be like if this really happened, would I believe or be a disbeliever?” which obviously is an answer they wouldn’t have.
One of the first questions we asked the dynamic duo was the following:
Q: Are we going to find out how these people were brought back?
T: “That’s one of the central questions of the entire series.”
M: As writers, one of the things we try to do was we try to answer some questions, but like anything when you get 1 answer, it kind of makes you have more questions. And in some ways, it’s almost beside the point because they’re back now. Regardless of how they came back. And it is something that Marty and Maggie are investigating and trying to figure out.
In the meantime, these people are still here. Much of the drama comes from, “What do you do now that you have this 8-year-old boy? How do you deal with that?” Henry’s got a very complicated reaction to this. He feels like “If I embrace this boy as my son, am I betraying the memory of the child that I lost.” Why is it happening is a question, but that’s not the central theme of every single episode.
With each person who comes back there is one thing they all have in common and that is that they don’t remember how they died. And it is safe to say that more dead people are coming back to this quaint little town for at least the next 8 episodes. Jacob was just the stone thrown into the pond that will start a ripple affect that characters in both good and bad ways.
Lost was an influence in this show and we will get some answers as to why all of the characters are coming back, but with all mysteries there has to be unanswered questions to keep you coming back for more. The music in Resurrection is creepy and weird but it of course makes sense in this unfolding mystery. Resurrection is a must watch show on ABC on Sunday evenings at 8 pm Central time. Join me as we watch the second episode to watch the mystery of dead people coming back to life continue.
*Disclosure: I received an all expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for the #ABCTVEvent and #Disneyevents in exchange for my coverage. All opinions are 100% my own.
